Student-Owned Businesses
A small student entrepreneurial program was conceived in 1999 to promote the interests of undergraduates not enrolled in business. The University now supports nine student-owned businesses in storefronts in the high-traffic "south 40" residence area. The students receive invaluable real-world experience, a love for entrepreneurship they could not get elsewhere, and are ambassadors for this career choice. Owner selection criteria hve been established, as well well as advisory, financial and operational policies. All the owners have reported financial success – not one store has gone out of business for financial reasons. Upon graduation, student owners must sell their businesses to other students.
All nine stores are independently owned and operated by student teams, who pay an average of $175 a month in rent to the University to cover program costs. A more detailed description of the students' businesses, along with a current business roster is available in this pdf document.
